Atherosclerosis is a major underlying cause of cardiovascular disease – the leading killer of men and women in industrialized nations around the world.  Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), also known as “bad” cholesterol, leads to the formation of atherosclerotic plaque in arteries that can obstruct blood flow and cause a heart attack or stroke.  High-density lipoprotein (HDL), also known as "good" cholesterol, is a crucial element of the body's own defenses against atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. In a natural process known as reverse lipid transport (RLT), HDL particles absorb excess cholesterol and other harmful substances in artery walls and carry them to the liver for excretion, thus inhibiting or even reversing the atherosclerotic process.
